We all know that our old standard bulbs spend more energy thus we spend more money, so we replaced them with the new generation of energy saving bulbs. However, they are not perfect, so the US Environmental Protection Agency created an emergency protocol you need to follow if the bulb happens to broke, since they release poison gas.
According to a study conducted by researches from the Farunhofer Wilhelm Klauditz institute for German’s Federal Environment Agency, these light bulbs when broken indoors, release 20 times more mercury concentration in the air than the acceptable maximum.
Energy Efficient Light Bulbs Can Cause:
- Migraines
- Fatique
- Anxiety
- Dizziness
- Seizures
- Cluster headaches
- Inability to concentrate
Energy Efficient Light Bulbs Can Cause:
Energy Efficient Bulbs Cause migraines, anxiety and even cancer. Reasons to go back to Incandescent Bulbs.
1. Energy saving bulbs can cause cancer
- Since these bulbs contain poisonous carcinogens, they can cause cancer, showed a study conducted by Peter Braun at Berlin German’s Alab Laboratory.
- Phenol, a mildly acidic toxic white crystalline solid, obtained from coal tar and used in chemical manufacture.
- Volatile white crystalline compound called Naphthalene, produced by the distillation of coal tar is used in mothballs and as a raw material for chemical manufacture.
- Styrene, an unsaturated liquid hydrocarbon, obtained as a petroleum byproduct.
2. Mercury which is a potent neurotoxin that is especially dangerous to children and pregnant women, is contained in energy saving bulbs. It is very toxic and it can cause seroius damages to the brain, liver, kidneys, the nervous system, it can damage the immune system, cardiovascular and reproductive systems. It can lead to insomnia, anxiety, tremors, headaches, memory loss, Alzheimer’s and cancer.
3. Energy saving light bulbs emit a lot of UV rays.
- This bulbs emit UV-B and traces of UV-C radiation, and since UV radiation is harmful for the skin and the eyes, can lead to cancer. The immune system gets attacked by this UV radiation and also damages the skin tissues enough to prevent the proper formation of vitamin D-3.
- As we can see, these bulbs are very toxic and dangerous for our health, they are considered household hazardous waste, so in case you break one, don’t throw it in the regular garbage, and open all of your windows and doors, evacuate the house for at least 15 minutes to minimize your exposure to the poisonous gas.
- Unfortunately, we will not be able to buy incandescent light bulbs since The Energy Independance and Security Act of 2007 (EISA) favors energy-efficient compact fluroscent light (CFL) bulbs and mandates the phase-out of regular light bulbs
